Sightseeing in the surrounding area

Rotterdam is both a municipality and a city, in the Dutch province of South-Holland. The municipality is the second largest in the country (after Amsterdam), with a population of approximately 600,000 people. The whole of metropolitan Rotterdam is home to 1.3 million people. The Port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe. Between 1962 and 2004, it was the world's busiest port. Since then it has been overtaken by Shanghai.

Rotterdam has many examples of the products of twentieth century modern architecture. Rotterdam is not only a major port but also a city that offers exciting choices.

Gouda is a typical Dutch city with numerous historic buildings and attractive canals. It is a popular destination for daytrips. The city is famous for its cheese, its 15th century town hall and the amazing stained-glass windows in the St. Janskerk church. However, there is much more to see and do. Gouda has a population of just over 70,000. Most of the city is below sea level. As well as its cheese, Gouda is famous for its stroopwafels (treacle waffles), candles and its clay pipes.
